Description

A virtual reality rendition of the classic space shooter genre. Survive as long as you can by shooting aliens into blocks!

Design

Hardware specifications is something that I should consider first before I start designing this game. I have to make sure that the game has to meet all the device specifications. Google Cardboard has limited degrees of freedom and it only has one button. For the controls, I utilized the button to shoot aliens and to select buttons on the main menu screen.

Since the Google Cardboard only has 3 degrees of freedom (3DoF), I designed the game to be user-centric. The user is the pivot of the revolving dome-shaped invisible spawners that each has different spawn intervals. Upon the alien being spawned, it move towards the user and if the user doesn't shoot the alien that approaches to them, the game is over. If the player shoots an alien, the player will obtain points. The main objective of the game is to survive as long as you can by shooting the aliens into blocks.

The aliens are heavily inspired from the iconic Space Invaders sprites. I've always thought 3D voxels look much better than 2D sprites on Virtual Reality. Instead of using premade 2-dimensional sprites, I decided to create 3D voxel aliens of my own designs using a software called MagicaVoxel.
